Good write-up. The only thing I would add is you can test it without removing it by just removing the electrical connector (you need a pick to remove the clip that holds it on, be careful not to lose the clip!), turning on the ignition and connecting/unconnecting the electrical connector. If its good, it should buzz as you connect it. If it doesn't buzz, you have to replace it.
Another cause of rough idling is corrosion of the idle position sensor connector. Many times, just removing it and spraying with WD40 and reconnecting will solve the problem, same thing with the air mass sensor connector if you have one.
