1997 Aero 119K miles

OK, I picked up my "new" Aero (did I mention I have an Aero now? Oh yes, so I did) last Sunday and here's what I've done since and why:

Changed Thermostat
Temp gauge was only going to proper place if I sat stationary with the engine running. As soon as I drove anywhere in this cold weather, the temp gauge would fall to barely above cold mark - Hence Thermostat stuck open.
changed plugs and Thermostat.

Changed Rocker box ventilation valve (PCV Valve)
I could blow through it both ways, so it was shot

Changed vacuum hoses
My idle was rough and when I checked the hose under the thick insulation next to the PCV valve it was so brittle it broke off in my hands, so I must have had loads of vacuum leaks. Replace them all, it is cheap stuff.
..yeah OK...and I like he look of red vacuum hoses! :-)

Lubed all door locks
Central locking worked but it kept blowing the fuse, so I removed all door cards and lubed the locks and pivot points (as well as the window winding mechanism while I was in there). Fixing the central locking also fixed my lack of courtesy lights AND the puddle lights in the door which glowed dimly (why?) as all rely on the same fuse.

Repaired exhaust
It was blowing a little where the exhaust comes into the mid section silencer. I used one of those metal things that looks a bit like a barrel which you mould around the joint and embed it into the exhaust fixing putty. Gum Gum make it, top job!

Fixed Aircon
I am SO pleased with myself! I chased the electrics and found that it was simply the AC relay under the box with the see through plastic cover in the engine bay. I just unplugged it and gave the contacts a quick rub with emery cloth. I am looking forward to a warm day (ie >10 degrees C) o really test it.

Intermittent indicator (front)
removed indicator and the plug was damaged as one of the catches was broken so the joint was weak. I have a spares car so I just removed the wires from the plug body and swapped with a good one.

Replaced Vacuum hose in Aquarium
As my boost gauge did not move at all. The hose had popped off the nipple in the aquarium

She's nearly there now. I have a couple more niggles left:

Tensioner and idler pulleys. They sound noisy and I always like to change them anyway

clutch pedal pivot is oval, causing excess slack pedal

both seat heater switches don't work and no backlighting

Headlight wipers don't work. Previous owner disconnected them (I have a spare set off my spares car)

I do not have a garage so mainly working in the street in the dark evenings.

I should hate all this but I love it, it is SO satisfying to be able to fix these things to make a good car a great one.

Really sorry for long post, but maybe one of my comments will hit a chord with someone about a problem they have.
