Thanks to everyone. Here is what I did to fix the problem.
1. removed throttle position sensor connector (to get it out of the way).
2. pulled hose from IAC to top of throttle body off.
3. Injected a small amount of brake cleaner through the hose into the IAC.
4. Temporarily re-connected and ran the engine--problem gone!
5. let it run a few minutes to let it suck out/dry up the solvent.
6. Reset the ECU to clear the code.
7. Pulled off the hose again and injected PB Blaster to protect/
lubricate.
8. let it sit while watching one period of an NHL hockey game (Bruins 2 Penguins 1)
9. Run it again and put everything back together.
