I installed the recently introduced Hella 500FF driving light kit on our 1991 9000 and I was highly pleased at both the performance and the value related to these lights. The 500FF is a larger version (6.32" diameter) of Hella's 200FF driving lights (5.64" diameter); however the 500FF light kit is priced at a high value $68 versus $121 for the smaller 200FF light kit (at Rally Lights). The beam pattern and distance of the 500FF lights is quite good, going out to somewhere between 2,000 to 2,500 feet. I would advise anyone who is interested in the 500FF driving light kit to consider also ordering Hella's #HL80558 LED push button toggle switch ($8.67) and using that switch in lieu of the switch that comes with the lights. The LED switch is a low profile switch with an adhesive backing that you can simply stick onto the dash wherever you wish, whereas the switch that comes with the kit requires that you drill a hole in the dash to mount it.
To mount the lights:
1. Buy a Stanley four inch L-shaped shelf bracket at Home Depot. Do
not use a smaller bracket since the metal will be thinner and
result in unwanted vibration of the lamps as you drive.
2. The bracket will be mounted via a torx bolt located on the back
side of the front bumper. This bolt is visible once you remove the
front grill.
3. Cut the bracket to the desired size and then drill a 1/4" (for torx
bolt) and a 3/8" hole (for light mounting bolt) in each bracket at
the appropriate places.
4. Install the wiring kit as per the instructions. You will have to
install the supplied wire tap onto the high beam wire going to the
headlights.
5. Look under the steering wheel (remove the panel covering that area)
to where the steering shaft goes through the firewall. There is a
circular grey rubber cover that you can peel back to run the
switch wiring from inside the car to the engine compartment using
a flexible retrieval tool. Then run the wiring inside to one of the
unused square switch position covers on the dash and out to the
front side of the dash. Then mount the adhesive backed LED switch
to the dash. This switch can be used to turn the driving lights on
or off when the high beams are activated.
Overal a relatively easy installation resulting in big time visibility improvements at night!
