Hey all, I've been through the archives but I'd like a little more input.
Here's the deal:
1993 9000 Aero, 92K miles.
For the last week I have been noticing a difference in my car's handling. It seemed to be unsettled in the corners, taking longer to settle in to a straight line after the corners and the rear seemed to be lifting. Power-on acceleration in a corner (freeway on-ramp) demands increasing steering angle (more than the usual front-drive-typical) but in in a non-linear fashion. It feels like the suspension goes through a transition at a certain lateral acceleration, requiring a change in steering input. The same transition occurs while exiting the corner.
Last night I was driving on an uncrowded (vacant) road near my house at about 30 mph and tried swerving to see if I could identify the condition more specifically. On the third swerve, the rear of the car stepped out into a mild slide. I caught it and continued on, but was very surprised by it since the car would not normally slide out at that speed with that kind of steering input. (I was ready for it, since I was trying to get the car to behave badly.)
The car's history:
I replaced the rear axle assembly last year due to a run-in with a curb that bent the original hub-knuckle/carrier. At the time, everything else looked and felt okay. The front suspension has new control arm bushings (1-year ago). Everything else is original.
I crawled under the car yesterday to see if there were any obvious issues, but didn't see missing bolts or evidence of sliding connections. My gut says its a broken sway-bar, or a loose panhard rod bolt. Any suggestions? Is it possible that my sway bar is fractured inside the bushing and I don't see it? Might my panhard support be sliding between bolt and body? Other ideas?
Thanks so much.
~P
