I am going through the exact same thought process right now. I have a 98 CSE that has had a series of problems (fuel pump, heater core, electrical failures) in a short amount of time. I have a long commute and an otherwise busy life, so a trouble-prone car is the last thing I need.
However, what others have said is true: the 9000 is a singular vehicle: large car space in a midsize package, SUV-like cargo capacity, nearly 30 mpg and 200hp (in my CSE), tank-like structure, foul weather handling, safety, luxury...tell me when to stop. You could spend $40K on a new car that won't give you half of those characteristics.
I guess what I'm saying is, hang in there. These are exceptional cars. Be vigilant about maintenance. Find a good independent SAAB mechanic for the stuff you can't do yourself. Your car can go 250K. Will you have to spend to fix stuff? Sure, but you won't be paying a bank $400 a month for a car payment either.
