Hey All,

I've sorted out my smoking/hard start problem on my '94 Aero (non-TCS), and it proved to be simple, and best of all it didn't cost me a thing!

What was happening :
My '94 Aero (5spd, non-TCS, 150k miles, bone stock setup) was having a hard time starting when the temp was below freezing, and the engine had gotten good and cold (like overnight). The starter would engage, and the engine would run a little high (1100 - 1200 rpms) for about 4 seconds, and then sputter and die. If I turned it over again, the engine wouldn't run smoothly (like it was missing a cylinder or 2), and die within seconds. If I turned it over again, and gave it some gas (held like 2000 rpm) I could keep the engine running, but a cloud of gray smoke would come out the tailpipe. The smoke had a peculiar waxy smell that I couldn't quite place.

I did my research, and thought I might be looking at doing the valve guides, or maybe there was something wrong with the AIC valve, or maybe the PCV system was foobared a little and sucking a lot of oil into the intake. I also considered that I had dirty injectors, for that and a variety of other reasons. I had been running SeaFoam in the gas tank, and figured I'd run another can of it.

It was when I opened the can, and was about to pour it in the tank that I recognized the smell associated with the smoke; it was the SeaFoam!

So I let the current tank of gas (with the SeaFoam in it) run out, and refilled with good high quality gas, and so far no problems! Starts right up, idles evenly, no matter how cold, and no smoke out the tailpipe.

Simple, easy solution. It just goes to show, try the easy, cheap solution first, before replacing your AIC valve (~$250), or replacing valve guides ($???).
