Need some details when it doesn't start-
You turn the key to START, and the starter doesn't turn. Do the dash lights dim? Lots of random clicking?
If the dash lights are clicking and the starter isn't turning, I'll put my money on a bad connection to the battery. Why sometimes? It takes a lot of current to get the starter turning; once turning, the current load drops. If you've got a somewhat bad connection, sometimes you get enough current to get the starter turning. If not, it doesn't start turning, and the dimming is the voltage bus getting pulled down. Same with the clicking - at low volages, the relays are pulling in then dropping out.
The first thing to do is to pull the battery connections off, and clean the outside of the posts and the inside of the clamps. A little Scotchbrite or sandpaper will do the trick. Inspect the cables - do you see a greenish or whitish powder in the copper strands? If so, they can be corroding. If this doesn't fix it, unbolt the ground lead from the chassis, clean up those surfaces, and re-bolt.
It can also be the battery - it's starting to lose it's punch. The voltage on the battery is nice, but we're talking about the current capacity, which you won't measure with a meter. Since it's a 9000, what is the EDU reading for a startup voltage, and how does it compare with the startup voltage last week, last month, last fall? If the startup voltage has been dropping recently, that can be a sign of a failing battery. Three years is not new, so it's suspect. (New is suspect, too, but one thing at a time).
Clean the cable contacts.
