sudden gasoline loss

Anyone have any ideas what would cause a sudden loss of all fuel in my tank? Filled up my tank, driving to work, approximately 35 miles later, I notice my gauge is indicating low fuel, pull over to inspect and car dies; fluid on rear axle, left side, heavy gas smell.
Just purchased car recently, it has very high mileage, but very minimal body/underbody corrosion, and no indication of any crash damage.
Haven't heard back from mechanic yet.
