Oh - no offence taken - just thought you might not know the numbers! Agree that it's surprising that one-third of the world drives on the left. I guess it dates from the time, way back in history, when most of the world map was coloured pink denoting the unlamented "British Empire". But Japan drives on the left (a major car producer, of course) as does Malaysia and most of southern Africa, and India must account for huge numbers (though from what I hear the rule is much observed in the breach).
Many European sports cars of the twenties and thirties - such as Alfa Romeo - were frequently built with the wheel on the right even though they drove on the right, and I was told my my dad (who drove racing cars) that this was because with few cars on the roads, it made sense to be able to see the edge of the road, especially where you might otherwise fall off the edge of an Alpine pass.
Ari says why can't we all get along, which is clearly right but perversely reminds me of the joke about the Swedish change-over - that the plan first suggested was for the trucks to change over on day 1, the buses on Day 2, and any cars left on Day 3...
