You need to remove a lot more before it blows up.
I assume you're talking about the ring that holds the lock cylinder into the door handle itself. That's perfectly safe.
By way of explaination, the tumbler assembly slips into a metal cylinder with a flat front face. The front face of the cylinder is where you put in the key, with a spring loaded door. On the back is the threaded rod where the right angle bracket bolts on.
You can slip the metal cylinder out of the door handle with no problem. The tumbler assembly is held in by crimps in the metal cylinder at the back. So as long as you don't start uncrimping the metal at the back of the cylinder, you can pop it right out of the door handle with no problem. Toss it in the air, roll it on the floor - it's not coming apart. Now, if you do uncrimp the bends at the back of the metal cylinder ,you will be able to slide the lock cylinder out. Even then, it won't fly apart, but you'll never get the spring loaded door to work again. So don't do it. But you don't need to.
