The Pre-Trionic DI systems used a knock sensor. Posted by Gene N [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: another DI question.....Ari??, KenManiac ![]() |
The DI/APC system used on the 1990-1992 cars (U.S. market) did use a knock sensor. The Trionic system in the 1993-1998 cars used the spark plug to detect knock, by checking the gas ionization in the cylinder right before ignition.
If your question is if the knock sensors on pre-1990 systems are the same as ones on the 1990-1992 DI/APC systems, then the answer is no. Physically, the knock sensor on the earlier cars looked like a small thick black puck that was attached to the engine block with a separate bolt. The electrical connector is on the side of the puck. The knock sensor on the turbocharged DI/APC cars look more like the temperature sensor that is on the intake manifold (vertical in-line electrical connector with an integral threaded mounting stud). To further confuse things, the knock sensor on the 1990-1994 non-turbo cars is the black puck model with bolt hole through the center.
As to your question about the frequency response of the sensor, I have no idea. The two sensors are different so their frequency responses could be different.
