The looks of a good bearing will be a dull gray! You might see some copper bronze showing though, which means it worn! The metal of the crank is high in nickel so you shouldn't see much wear on it. The main thing is you want to see evenness in wear. Adding some stander new bearings wont hurt. As Yaofeng said, use plastigage so you don't end up spinning a bearing.
