I can't comment on the transmission replacement. But it is very possible a new style shift coupler was installed in your car. The new style shift coupler is made to fit without having to modify the gear box or the shifter rod. The redesigned shift coupler was SAAB's response to the less than durable two piece rubber shift coupler (Only my guess. The number of shift couplers Trohattan had to make after the car was sold must have tripped an alarm.)
Frankly I don't know if the redesign was a blessing or a curse. Yes. The new shift couple is much more durable. It is one piece. The problem comes if and when it breaks. Since it is one piece, you need to remove the whole assembly to replace it. Anyone who has attempted this will know it is a PITA to do. There is a tapered pin which locks the front half of the coupler to the gear box gear selector shaft. In some instances removing the gear box to do it becomes necessary.
While the old style shift coupler breaks more often, those who own the 9k for some time know the symptom is predictable and the fix is easy. The old style shift couple is cheap. Installation is also quick.
