Removed the heater core, finally! Here is my experience.
Everything ever mentioned by the Haynes, Quasimotor and Barry's (as referred to by Quasimotors) has to be removed! There are no shortcuts.
The hood (because of the one-piece plastic molding mentioned below)
The long, one-piece (as opposed multi-piece set up of later models) plastic molding under the windshield
The ABS control unit & the ECU to be moved aside (because of the windshield wiper assembly)
The windshield wiper assembly (removing the wiper motor might have been adequate, but the amount of work is about the same - 6 bolts vs. 4/one circlip; the advantage is more room)
The false bulkhead
The secondary false bulkhead
The throttle housing
The heater motor assembly
The cruise-control vacuum pump assembly to be moved aside (to give more room for the A/C evaporator unit
The A/C evaporator unit to be moved aside (which entails some more work in giving the A/C piping some wiggle room)
The work is not difficult, just very tedious. It also requires decent book-keeping in re-using the correct bolts, circlips, retainers, etc. when putting all those pieces back in. I taped some of them to the various assemblies whenever possible.
Saab most certainly has failed us in this regard; how can a company that prides itself in engineering thoughtfulness do this to us?
One extra inch in the false bulkhead, or one size smaller heater motor assembly would have saved all those grief. The A/C evaporator could have been made shorter too (make it squatter if the there had been one more inch space in the false bulkhead). The whole process would have been a piece of cake. Just one lousy inch! would any of us mind driving a 9000 that is one inch longer?
