I came within inches of buying a 1999 9-3 Viggen coupe and selling my 1995 9000 Aero in showroom condition today. Literally came this close (probably more like millimeters). I must be crazy to even think of selling the perfect car.
Granted, owning a Viggen has been a dream of mine since I was in high school. I grew up on 9000 Aero's, this one being my third, but the Viggens always fascinated me with their stunning good looks, great colors (Lightning blue on a Saab is a rare sight), and high performance.
However, last night, I was browsing the Performance BB and came across a post "Which is faster, a 9000 Aero or a 9-3 Viggen?" and read it and all of the replies very closely. Putting performance aside, some of the other aspects of the cars were discussed, such as practicality, reliability, motor construction (weaker pistons in B235R vs. rock solid B234 in the Aero), sludge potential, etc.
After reading it, my mind did a 180 flip and I completely changed my mind. Why sell a beautiful, reliable (most of the time), practical, amazing machine? Yes, the 9-3 Viggen is the fastest production Saab ever built. Yes its gorgeous. What about engine sludge though? Piston build? Cargo area? Suspension? My Aero certainly doesn't need a band-aid Viggen Rescue Kit from Abbott, I can tell you that.
This is absolutely not meant to be an assault on Viggen owners. Trust me, I would give a lot to own both vehicles. That would be the closest thing to Saab heaven. But somehow, the thought of selling my car did not feel right, not after owning 2 Aeros in the past, and not after the time, money, and effort I have put in the car.
Bottom line: these are both wonderful automobiles, amazing in every way, down to the intelligently engineered cupholder in the Viggen or the beautifully designed Aero seats. It all comes down to me always wanting something else, something different. Sometimes, though, you just need to be happy with what you have.
I learned a lot in the past week, and I owe it to this wonderful bulletin board of Saab owners worldwide. This website is in and of itself one reason to own a Saab. Thank you!
