Check between the firewall and the transmission shift rod. There is a rubber coupling that can deteriorate and cause shifting problems. If this isn't the problem and your just grinding the gears getting it into 1st and 2nd, try refreshing the brake fluid. I had the same problem happen on my 87/9000 turbo. Thought the transmission was going, but after replacing the old brake fluid, the problem was fixed. What happens is old brake fluid gets moister in it and won't compress as much. Think of the hydraulics as a liquid rod that moves the clutch slave cylinder. If the rod compresses a little, then you lose lenght and can't push to slave cylinder the complete distance. Fresh brake fluid doesn't compress. If replacing with fresh fluid doesn't help then I would suspect the clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder as failing. The clutch master is easier to replace or rebuild than the slave, since removing the trans. is how you have to get to the slave cylinder. Check the shifter coupling and replace the brake fluid is to first repair to try and the cheapest. A pressure bleeder that attaches to the brake fluid reservoir is the best way to approach this repair, since all you have to do is add brake fluid, pump-up the pressure and bleed the system. Hope everything works out. If you notice the brake fluid reservoir is low, then I would check for leaks in the related componants. If the rubber coupling is at fault, just replace the rubber part and leave the two metal halves attached to the trans. and shifter rod. This way you don't have to re-set everything.
