If you only have to do a tranny, THAT goes out the bottom, but to do a motor, pull it from the TOP, and leave the tranny bolted to the engine.
This is a bare-bones list of crud to disconnect for the removal.
1) remove both CV shafts and the plastic inner-fender lining on the drivers side. Also remove the battery and battery box.
2) unbolt exhaust from the turbo, as well as from the back of the block.
3) unhook the wiring (more below on that)
4) unhook the radiator hoses and unbolt the oil cooler; it has to come out too.
5) Unbolt the top motor mount from the strut tower and remove the alternator.
6) unbolt the power steering pump from the block
7) Disconnect either shift linkage or shifter cable (auto -vs- 5spd)
Once all that crud is done, peek around and disconnect any random stuff I didn't specify, like fuel lines, speedometer sending unit wiring, battery cables, etc.
To remove the wiring, pop the top off the aquarium, exposing your blower motor and stuff. Follow all the wiring from the motor, back through the fake firewall, and it will ultimately hit one huge electrical connector that is probably zip-tied in place. Cut the zip ties, undo the connector and the complete engine wiring harness will come out with the motor.
There is about 1/2" of room between the strut towers to squeeze the motor / tranny combo up out the top of the engine compartment. HANDS DOWN the way to do it. Split the unit on the floor of your garage, swap over the wiring, etc and reinstall.
