New fuel pump, gas gauge reads low

Just replaced fuel pump on my 98 CSE. The fuel gauge reads low. It does go to full if I fill it. But it drops to 1/2 after about 4 gals of use. I have a couple of suspicions. First, the bottom of the pump is not sitting flat in the tank or, second, I bent the float arm. I guess the other reason could be that it's just calibrated that way. I'll let it run down and see when the light comes on. I may keep a can of gas in the trunk just in case. Any other ideas?
