I'm still a little unclear as to the problem. If the gauge hits red, then there's "boost" being made. That is to say, the turbo is providing high-pressure air, at lest to the intake where the gauge gets it's reading.
Also, if the car accelerates fine, then how is it different? How much different is it? If there was no boost, you would not say that the car accelerates fine. When a turbo seizes, or otherwise quits, these cars drive like complete dogs.
I'd check all the vacuum hoses to the intake and throttle body. Just as oldsaab said, there are a few that are not very easily seen.
