Just want to document the situation in hopes of saving others from going through the trouble I've been through. I saw posts that said that the CDE rear seat bottoms folded forward the same way as CSE seats, in spite of the fact that you can't fold down the seat backs. Last year I spent a at least half hour groping deeper in the crack between the seat back and seat bottom than any man should ever have to do and finally gave up. There was no strap to be found anywhere, and the seat wouldn't budge. Since I'm now doing my headliner and trim pieces, I absolutely had to remove the seat bottoms, so I spent another 20 minutes groping yesterday.
Finally I removed the screws from what were obviously hinges at the front of the seat bottoms, and with a lot of prying from a very awkward position I managed to get access to the back side of the latch up near the crack I had been groping and trip it to release the seat. This was no easy feat, since the latch is tight and the lever to move didn't protrude from it.
Now that the seat is out I can see the situation. There is a nearly invisible slit in the fabric at the rear of the seat bottom that was down in the crack when the seat was in place. Groping deep down in the slit I was able to find a piece of webbing attached to the latch. It's not a loop, and it appears that if it was originally a loop that just got detached on one side, the loop would not have been long enough to protrude out the slit in the fabric. Without a loop, it took vice-grips on the webbing to open the latch. I'm pretty confident that no one ever used the webbing and then stuffed it down in the slit in the crack where it could not be used again, so it has to have come from the factory that way.
Thanks Saab.
