When the car died, did the warning lights come on? BAT, etc? - the stuff than normally comes on when you turn the key to ON but don't start the car? If they didn't come on, suspect the ignition switch. Also, if the car isn't starting, try turning the key to ON (but not to START) and see if the lights come on - if they don't, it's most likely the ignition switch.
The ignition switch supplies the power for the DI, ECU, and fuel pump relay. And the dash indicator lights. If the switch contacts are getting dirty, the resistance goes up. Higher resistance means the contacts get hot, and the resistance goes up. At some point the voltage drop across the switch is enough to shut off the system. And it won't restart until it cools down.
If you do have indicator lights with the key ON, measure the voltage on the fuel pump fuse when you're cranking the engine. If you see 12 volts, the CPS is probably working. If you don't, it could be the CPS, but it could also be dirty fuel pump relay contacts - same issue as the ignition switch. Try swapping out the fuel pump relay and see if that helps.
It can happen, but fuel pumps usually keep running if they start running. But before I started swapping out parts, I'd do more troubleshooting. Jumper the fuel pump fuse to the emergency flasher fuse (because it's always powered). If you hear the fuel pump run, it probably isn't the fuel pump. But there is the fuel pump relay, and as mentioned, the ignition switch.
