Point of fact: 9000 transmissions of both kinds ARE more prone to failure than the industry average for that era. But "more prone" is not a guarantee of failure.
Trouble signs are obvious: slipping; slamming shifts; obviously early upshifts; absence of one or more drive directions. Slamming and early shifts are usually fixable. Slipping and no drive are not.
My experience: 3 9000 CSE autos in a row. One needed governor seals when I bought it and was still on the road long after I sold it. Second one had a noisy pump when we bought it, and it lasted us four years before we sold it, and the neighbor who bought it is still driving it two years later. Third one has never had any trouble.
Great match for the turbo engine, and no worries about clutch hydraulics.
