Timing chain, gear replacement advice needed Posted by Kevin M [Email] ![]() ![]() |

Ok, what have I got myself into. The original task was to replace the t25 garrett to fix a oil seal leak. This job morphed into: examined the exhaust manifold and saw a leak in the #3 cyl- lower stud missing (broken)and two of the long studs broke with ease upon removal. So, now we have to drill out the stud- you can't see, you need an angle drill (excuse to buy another tool) and there is too much crap in the way.
Best to remove the head rather than screw up the stud threads. So, I got some advice from my friend and former Saab technican for things to look at and R/R while I have the head off. He suggested timing chain, sprockets, guides. I have a bit of chain noise when cold, so I have suspected some stretch, but all the marks are spot on. So, should I change out the components. EEUROPARTS has only a Scantech lower gear- is the quality OK. Everyone seems to cary IWIS chains, I'll stick with OEM Guides.
How about valve guide seals? Anything else I am missing? I really appreciate everyone's input. THis is a daily driver- but I am going to have to get a newer backup soon. Like now.
All the best,
K
