The tach signal comes from the crank position sensor. If the gauge is acting up and the car is still running top notch, the gauge may be touchy. If the tach acts up and the car stumbles or runs anything other than perfect, the CPS or wiring may be subject.
That being said, I've had a CPS go twice before. One was from working to flat dead just like that. The other went from working, to dead, to working a few mins later (once it cooled down?) to dead again, to working, then finally it died completely. There was no odd tach signal / flutter and engine stumble associated with it.
1994 CPS is the newer style that inserts in from the front of the block, not the one located behind the crank pulley.
