Heat doesn't help anything electronic, but DIs do fail over time. Most cars these days have some form of direct ignition. And most cars have direct ignition coil failures. As noted, 120K isn't outside of normal.
Use NGK BCPR 7ES - do not substitute. I don't care if the parts guy tells you the BelchFire 501 are just the same. Gap them to just under 1 mm (.95 is nice). Don't assume they come out of the box correct. Check regularly, as a large gap will destroy the DI.
List price for the DI is $400. You can mail order a new one for mid $300 (eEuroparts). eBay works, but the bad news is that it is likely used. How much life is left? If I flea-bay a DI, I'd get two and keep one as a spare. Or buy a new one mail order and keep the used one as a spare.
Yes, there is debate about red versus black. Black is cheaper, and is used for the T7 system in the 9-3 and 9-5. Black will work in a 'red' car like a 9000. But Saab doesn't recommend it - there are differences. Most likely you won't notice it, not unless the engine is tending towards knock. The DI is the main knock detector, and there are differences between red and black.
