I was successful in supporting the engine in a couple of VW Golf's and in my 9k with the following (sorry I don't have a picture.):

You'll need: A good 2x4, some solid plywood, 2x 1/4" threaded eye bolts about 6-8" long, a few sturdy 3/8" nut/bolt/big washer combos, and a couple 6" lengths of very sturdy link chain. All available at your local hardware or big-box home improvement center.

Remove the hood from the car.

Measure across the space between the "grooves" in the top of the fenders that accept the hood in its closed position. You'll need the inside edge length right above the line that the motor suspension hooks are in.

Cut a 2x4 equal to the distance across the *inside* distance and set aside.

From good plywood (5/8" or better), cut two trapezoid shaped pieces about 8" across the bottom, 6" tall and about 4" across the top.

Nail or, better, screw those trapezoids to the 2x4 so that the 2x4 is aligned with its longer axis vertically. (the 2x4 needs to be oriented so the 4" sides are vertical.) The longer edge of the trapezoid will be at the bottom, in the fender groove.

Place that bridge across the engine space, with the plywood pieces resting in the fender grooves.

Drill 1/4" vertical holes through the bridge were the motor hooks are. You can really get away with only one hole if you still have the timing chain side on its motor mounts. If not, you need two holes.

Using a long threaded eye bolt, a couple washers, and the nut that fits, thread the eye bolts through the holes and attach the nut on top of the 2x4. Make sure the eye bolts are fully extended "down" toward the engine.

Now, take the chain lengths and bolt them one side to the eye hook and the other side to the engine support eye. Get the chains as tight or "short" as you can manage before you have to tighten with the eye-hook top nuts.

Tighten the nut on the eye hook to take the weight of the motor, and eventually lift it just a bit. If you do it right, this will support the motor just were you'll want it, and you can roll the car around on its wheels.

The 2x4 bridge should be able to hold the weight of the motor just fine. I used one of these to support the motor and transmission while I put in a new tranny mount. The great part of this tool is it allows infinite micro-adjusting of the motor height by tightening or loosening the top nuts on the eye bolts.

Hope this helps.

email me if you have more detailed questions...
