I doubt you'd do damage if you're off a tooth or two.
But I think, if you set the timing according to the Haynes manual and felt comfortable with it enough to button everything up and start the car, you probably did it right.
As another poster notes, upon reassembly after major surgery it takes awhile for your valve tappets to pump back up again. More like 30 minutes to an hour at idle. This is normal, and the car will sound awful while it's going on.
If by looking at the tach and listening to the engine you feel the motor's running smoothly (albeit noisily) then just let the car idle until it quiets down. If your timing's off the engine will likely be shaking, bogging down, hunting or various other signs of wacky timing.
If you feel the tappets are the issue, note that you should avoid revving the engine past say 2500 rpm until the racket subsides. Personally I just leave the car idling and don't touch the throttle until the noise is gone.
