The problem is the electrical portion of the ignition switch. The key portion turns the electrical portion, which is a long shaft with multiple contacts. REPLACE IT NOW! A part or parts of that shaft are broken. At any point in time those contacts can move, and all the power to the ignition and fuel injection can stop, and the car will stop dead. Loads of fun on the highway. It can also create some more expensive problems. On a friend's car a similar thing happened. Be believe the starter motor engaged while the engine was at speed and destroyed the starter motor.
It is possible that the electrical portion of the switch assembly is just loose. Easy to check, as is replacing the part. The cost quoted above is the cost of a new electrical switch at eEuroparts. (p/N 4946315). Replacement is easy and straightforward.
The electrical portion of the switch simply connects to the back of the key cylinder. No need to replace the key cylinder, which would be a pain. Drop the bottom of the 'clamshell' that surrounds the steering column just behind the steering wheel. 5(?) torx bolts from the bottom - note the locations because they are different lengths. Turn the wheel 90 degrees one way, and you'll see a little tab that holds the upper and lower portions together. Pop it back, turn the wheel the other way and do the same to the tab on the other side. With the telescoping lever down, you can now drop down the lower portion. Leave the upper portion be.
The ignition switch is held to the lock cylinder with two allen bolts. Wiggle the switch - if it moves, tighten up the two bolts. If it's solid (as I expect it is), buy a new switch. Just loosen the bolts (don't need to remove them), slip the switch back and out, swap in the new one, tighten it up, and you're good to go.
