The Direct-ignition system was designed to work with the NGK NGK BCPR 7ES specified in the manual. The 7 heat range is important for the turbo. With the DI system, the spark plug just isn't a sparky thing. The DI in combination with the spark plug detect pre-knock and adjust the timing and boost to prevent knock. Really a cool system.
The '85 900 used a conventional ignition system, and the Bosch Platinums are good plugs for that application.
If you put in something other than NGKs will your engine explode? No. In fact, it may run just the same. Or it may not. Where it can problematic is if the engine has a tendency to knock, or gets a load of bad gas, or is just seeing a heavy load on a hot day. The DI may not be as sensitive to pre-knock, and you could get knocking.
Bottom line - there is no better plug for a DI-equipped Saab than the NGK's specified, gapped per the manual. I like going a little tight, because plug gap opens with age. If someone is having ignition problems with a DI-equipped, car, my first recommendation is to make sure you've got the specified plugs. If the car is running fine, now is not the time to experiment.
