It's not clear if the key not springing back has anything to do with the sound. As noted, it's the switch behind the ignition key. It's easy to replace, and you want to do this SOON. Why? Because without that spring-back feature, the key could drift into the Start postition. So what's bad about that? If the starter kicks in when the engine is running at speed, it can damage the flywheel and WILL damage the starter.

As to the noise. It could be a few things. One thing that comes to mind is the starter - that's right about where it would be if you had X-ray eyes and could see through the firewall. Why when you put it into gear? In gear, the engine/transmission moves a little with the increased load. This could be just enough movement to move the damaged starter gear into contact with the spinning flywheel.

Other options would be the bolts holding the transmission to the engine are loose (!!). Again, not in gear there aren't any big loads. But put the car into gear, and the engine moves. Things can now shift. It's possible your engine and/or transmission mounts are shot, and when in gear, something is pressing on something else. It could even be something on the belt side of the engine, where there are lots of spinny things, comes in contact when the engine moves when you put it into gear.

Is the noise the same in Drive as in reverse? The engine moves different ways between forward and rear gears.

Fix the key. It's not a good thing to have going on. As to the noise, Open the hood and have someone put the car in gear (FOOT ON BRAKE!!) See if you can pinpoint the noise. Look at the belt end of the engine for obvious signs of wear (plastic or rubber bits strewn around). Look to see if there is a movement difference between the engine and transmission. Look to see if the engine moves a lot when you put it into gear. Moving some is normal. How much is too much? Look at the upper engine mount (dogbone). The rubber shouldn't be falling apart or badly ripped.
