Search this board for the russian 9000 wiring diagram - its for a '97 but the AC stuff is the same.
The yellow wire on the top of the compressor activates the compressor's clutch. An alligator clip and a 5' chunk of insulated wire to the + post of the battery will work just fine.
Split the connector at the compressor, connect the alligator clip but leave the other end free, start the engine, put the ACC control on Auto and scroll the temp to low. Touch the other end of the wire to the + post of the battery and the AC should kick in.
Feel the silver tubes running towards the firewall - if you've got enough refrigerant, the big tube should start getting cool. If its too empty, it might not. In any case, you shouldn't add any r134 without using a gauge, and for real diagnosis of problems, you need a high-side gauge too.
AC systems slowly lose refrigerant over time, so it may be mechanically ok, but just a bit too low to close the low-pressure switch.
