Having worked on my 9000's for the better half of 10 years, I have developed a GREAT appreciation for the build quality, level of engineering and ease of working on a 9000. As I tell people, they seem like they were engineered to be worked on; a mechanic and engineer sat down together and made sure that bolts and nuts were easily accessable, etc. That being said.....

The first "what were they thinking?" came when my speedo stopped working and I diagnosed the issue to be the speedo drive gear down inside the tranny. Why not make THAT gear something that will never wear out, and chew through a couple extra speedo transducer gears in the life of the car, instead of making both gears wear evenly, giving you a 50/50 chance of the easy, or impossible-to-change gears going?

The second, is why in the name of all that is good, did Saab do away with the lift eye on the transmission? The eyelet on older trannies allow you to pick the transmission up so perfectly balanced and tilted, that it nearly falls back together. This is NOT the case on newer trannies.

I admit, on every other vehicle I've worked on, the list of "wtf?" is nearly endless, but this was little consolation for me at 3:30am this morning while I struggled with lining up a '97 Aero tranny, and was wishing it had a perfectly located pick point like the old stuff did.
