Broken Exhaust Studs Posted by Bill Homer [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: 1987 exhaust manifold mystery, Peter Charak, Fri, 27 Jun 2008 12:40:16 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Those "shallow depressions" are most likely what is left of the two broken off exhaust studs. Unfortunately, this is a fairly regular occurance on a SAAB 9000 turbo, particularly the longer studs used on the outer four positions - my car currently has two broken, still driving it per the advice of my indy while waiting for the gasket to eventually fail. There is some thought that the head gasket will fail first.
My advice is to "splurge" on new studs, all seven of them - they are a couple of dollars each Reusing 20+ year-old studs is asking for trouble. Anders recommends replacing the long studs with short ones, which break less often, he says that there is no detrimental effect. While the head is out you can take it to a machine shop to remove the old studs much more effectively than you will be able to do it yourself or in the car (which is a complete pain).
