Need some bright ideas for my instument & dash lights

The instrument panel lights in my '96 CSE suddenly died. Curiously, my daughter's are out on her '95. Those went first, then she comes home from school and now mine go. I swear cars have viruses!
Anyway, by trying the one from my car, I determined her car had a bad rheostat. I had questions about mine, but that eliminates that as the problem in my car. There still seems to be a flaky connection between the wiring harness and the rheostat, but she has dash lights again.
My car is a different story. A known good headlight switch and known good rheostat don't help. I'm not good enough with circuit testing to analyze this but would love some ideas. The fuse is fine, too.
One thing that is interesting and could just be coincidental... My RR tail light died the other day. Lights were on in daytime on a road known for head-ons, so I wouldn't have noticed the dash lights being out. Also, the front "running light," the one inboard of the headlights is also out. I'll put new bulbs in those tomorrow and see what happens. Don't see why there would be a relationship, but in the meanwhile, I'd love some ideas about my instrument lights.
