These are great cars, but be prepared to spend some money to fix some stuff to get to a known starting point. A 12-year old car with 140K is going to need some stuff, but if you have a decent sense of the car's maintenance history and it's a clean car with everything working you should be OK. But either go over the whole car very carefully of have a Saab-specialist tech go over it so you know the potential gotchas.

140K is in the range when a lot of stuff goes south (on any car), like radiators, water pumps, maybe alternators, PS pumps, hoses, etc. Not bad really, some of it's just "once in the life of the car" stuff.

For example, I bought a '95 with 138K on it and it was at major maintenance interval, needing tires, upper motor mounts, tranny mount, all filters, exhaust, front brakes, serp belt, CV boots, and a few other things. Not bad, but I DIY so it was easier. Since then (3+ years) it has needed very little beyond normal maintenance. I knew the owner who had a pretty full history on it, but it was just at a maintenance cycle and they wanted a new car.

DIY is important on these cars. In good shape they are very reliable, but you have to keep on top of things. One of the best posters here, Ari, has a great post on this (see below). He notes that knowing the maintenance history is important, and I agree, but you *can* be OK if you don't get it. If a car is obviously clean and well-cared for (not just spiffed up to sell) and the owner seems as if they are being straight with you, as long as you get a thorough inspection you should be OK. My '96 CSE was like that and it just turned 150K yesterday, bought it at 90K.
