Thanks Buck, I wasn't sure what they did outside of Chicago and East St. Louis.
Some additional notes on the Illinois tests: on my 1994 SAAB, they test the emissions by sticking a sensor probe into the tailpipe while running the car through a predetermined cycle on a dynamometer. In the past, I have had to remind them to put their big cooling fan in front of the car to provide airflow through the radiator, the engine gets quite hot without it.
On my 1996 Audi, they test it solely by plugging in to the OBD-II port. OBD-II is somewhat tamper resistant and there is a "readiness" flag that gets reset in the software when error codes are erased; it takes about a week of normal driving for the "readiness" flag to reappear so the car can be tested. I replaced an oxygen sensor over the past weekend, need to wait about a week before I can take the car in for testing.
