Odd inner CV boot failure

I was under the Aero the other day, checking out a problem with the front calipers sticking a bit, and I noticed that the driver's side (LHD) inner CV joint (tripod bearing) boot was leaking. Or had leaked.
There was CV joint grease piled up in all the usual places a spinning joint would usually fling it. So I checked the boot out carefully, looking for the crack or hole.
The problem is, I couldn't find one; what gives? How could I be flinging grease if there's no hole?
Also, the problem with the brakes was that there was zero grease on the guide pins. I had just done the brakes a just a couple of months prior, and put brake caliper grease on the pins, and it's all worn away, which seems kinda quick for that to happen. Can you replace the little rubber boots and bushings around the guide pins, or do you have to just go ahead and replace the whole caliper?
