Two problems - 1997 Aero 96k miles

1 Petrol gauge reads zero, even with fuel in the tank. Intermittently goes to full or the correct reading. EDU goes to --- on the mile display when gauge is zero. Mpg continues to show a sensible and changing value, which suggests to me that fuel and miles are being measured correctly. I have substituted a good SCC - no change to the symptons.
2 Occasionally car will not start, no CEL. Jumpered pump runs ok but no fuel at injector rail banjo. Open petrol cap, huge whoosh - far more than the usual gentle hiss - and the car starts and runs as well as usual. (with the cap replaced and clicked)
Any advice on the above problems would be appreciated.
Many thanks
Roger Palethorpe
