Sticky performance tyres tend to eat up fuel and they are doing nothing much for you on the highway. Also, I understand part-worn tyres may use less gas than new ones. So if this could be a factor with your car, next time you could look for a tyre that's sold for low rolling resistance.
Different considerations apply when you want to stand the thing on its ear through a few corners, of course - which is why I use performance tyres and put up with the extra fuel bills.
Your pressures sound a bit low to me, by the way - depends on rim size though.
