I think the first part of the question he asked was how to do this without loosing the R-12, ya gotta be really fast to swap a compressor in to keep from loosing the molocules! As to pumping the stuff and saving it for reuse, I don't belive you can legally do that anymore. At least in California if you have to replace a part, say the compressor, then they are supposed to convert to R-134. Again, I'd recommend parking the tensioner and removing the belt and seeing if the compressor is wobbling, that would be the bearing. Also, while in there I'd check the two idle pullies to make sure they are smooth and you can't feel any bearings when you turn them, smooth only. These get noisey, fail by seizing, and *then* the smoke smell comes out as they stop turning and the belt is pulled across them.
