O2 sensor codes can be triggered by anything that affects the lean/rich mixture. Very often this is vacuum leaks someplace, rather than the sensor itself.
Did you rule this out before replacing the sensor?
Also, generic sensors have varying reputations for living happily with ECUs. Could be the sensor you installed isn't quite in harmony with the car's brain.
Crappy running also can be the result of vacuum leaks -- and did you take a look at your plugs? The running problem may well be unrelated to the O2 sensor.
