Fuel pump, relay, or other???

1988 9000 Turbo. (A while back I did HG and the engine has been wonderful.)
Started fine the other day. Only gets started rarely. Battery is always dead and needs a jump always as it has developed an internal short. Fuel cell was on empty, but had enough fuel to start and drive up and down the driveway. Was last moved 2 weeks ago. Started properly every time, a few times.
Now won't start. Turns over fine. Plugs are dry. When I disconnected upper banjo bolt on Bosch fuel filter and tried to start there was no pressure and no spray. NOTHING. Also, fuel in filter smelled a bit like varnish. But car just started 2 weeks ago and drove without problems. I added 3 gallons, so the fuel is empty light went off.
SOOOOOOOOO, is it relay? Is it pump? How do I tell?
Fuse #14 seems ok, but I replaced it anyway. No difference.
Relays are behind the glovebox? Which relay is it?
Was it a mistake to leave the gas tank on empty with the light for too long?
Most important question...WILL A 900 TURBO FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY (from an '88 or '89 900 turbo convertible) FIT THE 9000? I HAVE AN EXTRA 900 TURBO FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY OUT OF A 1989 OR 1988 (I FORGET THE YEAR).
Thanks,
Used to be Chaz
