So I manually checked the flapper actuator, it seemed to do a good job of keeping the A/C out of the cabin, but still no heat. So today I flushed the heater core, put some prestone coolant flush treatment in for about 1/2 hour and then flushed the core both ways with tap water. The core definitely didn't seem blocked, the coolant flush came though with barely any pressure, and the tap water went through and became clear pretty quickly. Put everything back together, let the car warm up and still no heat.
I guess i'll have to bite the bullet and change the heater core before it starts getting cold. I still don't really understand- it seems like the h.c.'s not blocked and both hoses going to and leaving it are hot, seems like I should be getting some heat, even if it's not optimal.
I didn't check to see if the thermostat is installed correctly. To do that, do I need to drain the coolant?
Incidentally, does anyone have any advise for stopping up coolant hoses? Some type of stopper or cork? I just stuffed the hoses with rags but still managed to make a mess. I'm doing the work on the street, I'd like to avoid putting too much in the runoff...
Thanks!
