No heat... few questions

Hey everybody,
I was driving to college from my hometown this fall prepping for another hellish semester when I was met with a very crappy surprise.
It was midnight in the mountains and had started snowing, so i had the heat on lightly. Warm... perfectly fine.
Stop at a gas station and get back in the car, zero heat. It's not a big issue in August and September, but it will get very cold up here.
I know you're supposed to read previous posts, and I've been trying to clue myself in. But this is my first experience with the cooling system other than flushing. I recently flushed my coolant and everything came out nice and clear everywhere after a few rounds of water, and nothing seemed to be blocking anything (this was 3 months ago). I filled with the one small thing of Bars stop leak, and that's all and had been perfect since.
Where is this "actuator rod" for the heating system at , I couldn't find a clear description (clear enough for dumb ol me). Also, with the thermostat, is there a way to test it without draining and removing it, or other symptoms I would have if it were bad. Were I live for school there's no way to do major work (both time consuming and messy are hard to pull off these days).
Thanks for any advice you have for a bad situation, I wish I had a garage to make things simple.
