I'll assume the fuel pump fuse.

I'm somewhat baffled by a car starting with the fuel pump off. All I can guess is that a warm car really means a recently run car, and that the fuel system is pressurized from the last run.

Now, if the engine won't start with the fuel system pressurized and the pressure is maintained (by the fuel pump), but does start if the pressure drops, then the issue is too much fuel at starting. Basically, flooding the engine.

So this is a clunky work around for a flooding problem. It's hard to flood a fuel injected engine.

First, how do the spark plugs look? Lean running? Rich running? I'll bet rich. Are all the plugs the same, or does one or two cylinders look richer than others?

If all are equally rich, I'd suspect a bad Fuel Pressure regulator. Either leaking, or just not regulating. The FPR should drop pressure during starting, otherwise you'll get an over-rich mixture.

If only one or two plugs look bad, I'd suspect a sticky fuel injector for that cylinder (or two).

In some years, in some limited models, there was a cold-start enrichement injector. I've never actually seen one in a car, but the manual shows it. Do you have a fuel injector stuck onto the side of the intake plenum, with an electrical connector and a fuel line? If so, your car may be so equipped, and that injector may be leaking fuel.

But step 1 - check the plugs. And make sure they are the exact NGKs specified in the manual, gapped per the manual. How do they look?

Step 2 - pull the thin vacuum hose that goes from the throttle body to the fuel pressure regulator off the throttle body. (Engine off). Carefully suck on that tube. It should taste a little oily, but hold vacuum. If it doesn't hold vacuum, or you taste a lot of fuel, the FPR is blown.
