This sounds so like what happens when the positive terminal is barely making contact that though you said earlier that the terminals look okay, I want a positive declaration by you that they're perfect before I give up on my suggestion.
Ie there's massive corrosion between the post and the clamp down inside it can be hiding.
And if either cable has been cut off and one of those add-on terminals has been put on, they can get bad acid corrosion under the steel plate that clamps the strands down into place, and do what you describe.
