Did the radiator worked damage the fan ? Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Actually, the left side of a vehicle is viewed from, Saab9000Guy, Fri, 29 Aug 2008 12:47:56 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Replacing the thermostat with a 82 is a nice touch, but won't fix this issue.
What does the temperature gauge show?
The sensor on the left-hand side of the engine (as viewed facing forward) is a sensor, not a switch. It provides the signal to the EDU. The EDU drives both the radiator fan AND the temperature gauge.
So - does the temperature gauge work? Does it move up from the peg and sit at about 7:30 to 8:00 position? When the car overheats, does the gauge go up into the red?
If so, then the sensor is working.
I assume that the car overheats when it is sitting at idle, and it DOESN'T overheat while moving down the road at speed. The radiator fan is there to replace airflow when the car is sitting still; if the car is overheating while moving (at at least 30 mph), then there is a problem with the cooling system.
Since the radiator was worked on, do you know the fan still works? Was it hooked up correctly? Does it still have a ground return?
There are three fuses and three relays associated with the fan system. All the fuses are in the relay box in the engine compartment. Make sure fuses 2, 3, and 4 are OK. The radiator fan relay is the relay that drives the fan low speed circuit. The "two speed" fan relay drives the high speed circuit, but the fan should kick on at low speed first.
After you've checked the fuses, pop the radiator fan relay out of the socket, and with a fat wire, jumper pins 30 to 87. No need for the engine to be running. The radiator fan should kick on. If it doesn't, you've got a bad fan, bad resistor, bad wiring, blown fuse 4.
If jumpering 30 to 87 turns on the fan, it might be an issue with the EDU, depending on what the temperature gauge reads.
