64 miles/day is 340 per week. 16K a year, with no other driving.
I'd put this many miles on a car I knew well and could fix on my own. But I think it's dicey to do on 17 yr old unknown quantity. Saab 9Ks are marvelous cars that can go many miles, but they can get pricey to fix if you don't have the time and skill to do the work on your own. They aren't hard to work on, but unless the '91 is pristine you'd be better looking for something newer. And maybe another make.
HOWEVER, if you know that all the predictable Saab 9K trouble spots have been addressed *and* that normal older car stuff is is *very* good shape (exhaust, oil, coolant, trans oil, CV boots, filters, brakes, tires, radiator, water pump, fuel pump, PS pump, steering rack, shocks & struts, etc.) are OK then you might be good to go. But that's asking a lot.
Comparison: 3.5 years ago I spent $2K on a '95 9000 CS. Knew the previous owners. Car was at a major maintenance point and needed much of the above over the next 6 months. That ran another $1,500 or so. It's now a reliable car, and still needs minor stuff. But it's 13 y-o and I can do most of it. If you spend $1,500 on the '91, be sure to set money aside for repairs it will need.
These are great cars, but go in with your eyes open. IMHO, you should look for a different car for your wife's commute, probably thinking Asian, as your price point is too low for Euro makes unless you can do most of your own work or find an incredible deal. Either way, get AAA Plus so you get 100 mile towing. Seriously.
