somehow, I seem to remember the angle cut facing the turbo. I checked on my own car, '96 Aero, and it is facing at about a 40 degree angle into the flow (and the opening is rounded, not flat cut). Maybe that was the c900 I was remembering. Must be getting old, hehehe. Anyway, the principle remains the same. The purpose is to draw out the gases and if it's pointing directly into the stream, it won't happen. Looks like I have to dig into the books and do some math. Speaking of aerospace, I myself am in this field as well. However, my specialty is in avionics (radar, navigation, flight-controls, comms ect...)where I have been for many many years (ex-USAF F-15/F-16 avionics specialist). I'm a computer engineer (electronic engineering and computer science thrown together) with a specialty in avionics. Automotive engineering has always fascinated me as well and is a hobby of mine. I have tons of books on the subject... can't get enough of it. It's incredibly complex. Whenever I see something which seems, well, illogical (why did SAAB design this like this?) I'm constantly reminded that there is an often brilliant engineering reason why, especially considering the constraints they had. Sorry, for going off on a tangent. Back to your problem. As I mentioned earlier, a diagnostic vacuum gauge (not a manometer!) will point out a lot of mechanical defects in an engine. I'm sure, one will help you with this particular problem. Hopefully, you can get this problem taken care of real soon.
